Chapter Twelve

How could anything that felt this good be wrong?

Once had been a mistake that he’d had no intention of letting happen twice. But she was hot and wet and so very willing. Her arms were twining around him and he had not expected his body to answer as it had, spending on the first thrust like a green boy and hardening ready for more.

He should withdraw. He should have done so before to protect her as he’d promised. But then he should have been gentle and that was not done either. Yet she did not seem to mind. She was whispering to him, demanding more and moving under him, trying to excite him.

He had been assured by his married friends that nice women, the kind he’d meet in London ballrooms, didn’t like the act. But as he’d gasped out his last and come into her the second time, she had shuddered under him in ecstasy.

He felt like a god.

Then the feeling began to fade and the regret grew. He started trying to pull away and prepare the inevitable apology and the offer which must follow what they had just done together.

As if she could sense what he was thinking, she clung to him all the tighter. ‘Kiss me,’ she whispered. ‘Do not worry about the past or the future. Kiss me now.’

And he did. Her mouth was as welcoming as her body had been. When her lips parted from his, it was only so they could feather little kisses along his jaw, the sort that tickled and made him smile.

Then her hands came to his temples. Her fingers drew tiny circles there, with increasing pressure, settling into a rhythm that matched the beating of his heart. Her fingers were in his hair, on his neck and face, smoothing away the pain in his head, silencing the doubts and the voices.

He closed his eyes and lost himself in the feeling, drifting on a cloud of spent passion.
